SPORT ACTIVITIES

Australia has a rich sporting heritage and is one of the best performing countries when you consider the relatively low population. Australia regularly produces strong Olympic performances, is the most successful team in Rugby World Cup history and has dominated international cricket for the last 20 years. Recently the Aussies have even turned in some handy performances at 'soccer'!

Aussie Rules

Aussie Rules Football is a distinctly Australian game and is contested by two teams of 18 players. The aim of the game is to score as many goals as possible by kicking the ball between the other teams posts. The winner is the team with highest number of points at the end of the 4th quarter. The game originated in Melbourne and whilst popular elsewhere in Australia, Victoria really is the heartland of Aussie Rules and the best teams and games can be seen there.

Cricket

Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Rick Ponting, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist are just some of the world class cricketers defeated by the heroic England Ashes team of2005! Aside from this rare blip, Australia has dominated one day and test match cricket since the early nighties. Regularly defeating the likes of England, Pakistan, India and South Africa in bi-annual test series and bringing home the cricket world cup in 1999, 2003 and 2007, the Aussies are a team to be feared.
Australia has a perfect climate for cricket and games can be seen throughout the whole of Australia. Notable international venues include Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.A day at the cricket is an unforgettable experience, just remember to bring your sun hat!

Olympic Sports

Australia's outdoor lifestyle creates a dynamic sporting environment, which has seen Australian athlete consistently put in strong performances in the likes of track and field, sailing, cycling and most notably swimming.suchis Ian Thorpe who won 5 gold Olympic medals and over 11 world championship gold’s, winning his first gold at the age of 16.
Swimming pools, cycle velodromes and other athletics facilties are readily accessible throughout Australia for all ages.
